Pesonally I consider Pearson to be the best driver rin Nacsar history but concerning Petty it was a toss up. If anything David was a little smarter. He did Petty twice at Daytona.
At Big D in 1974 for the July race when he let off the throttle completely after taking the white flag forcing Richard to take the lead only to run him down and pass Richard for the win.
And of course the 500 in 1976. Pearson's presence of mind to depress the clutch after Petty wrecked him kept the car running and David took the checkered flag at 25mph.
If that bump happened on anyother lap of the race there would have been no accident. Pearson stayed in it when Richard moved into him.
Bobby Allison surely does not like Richard. The talk is always about Wilkesboro in 1972 but there was another incident at the same track that nobody talks about unless you read Stock Car Racings Magazine's report from fall the event of 1977.
Petty had the car to beat that day and was walking away from the field. He had lapped every except car for Darrell Waltrip. Petty was putting a lap on Bobby in the 4th turn. Allison crowded Richard running him onto the end of the pit wall head on. Petty was hot that day. Bobby's payback for Wilkes in 1972.
SRC's article was worded differently for obvious reasons but every body knew what happened.
