I'm approaching a milestone and wanted to do something special.

So for my 999th post, I honor one of our founders, Tom the Songsmith, with a few rarities of his favorite 1964 Plymouth Fury from the 1964 season.

We start the year, of course, at the beginning. The typical promo shot at Daytona.




Not sure when this was taken, possibly pre-season. They tested the Goodyears back then too! (NOTE: Ricklou commented that thsi shot was likly taken at Atlanta, during 1965 pre-season testing, using the 1964 car.)

Awwwww! What a great post! Probably the greatest screaming post of all time!!!!
Thank you Paul. These pics are really special. I was an eighth grader when the 64 Daytona was run. Yep I really am that old!
That was near the beginning of a lifelong love of Nascar and will always perhaps be my favorite year although any of the great Petty years has to be there too.

As far as bringing us together goes, I think several of us did that. And it isn't work when everyone else is wishing for the same type of place you are.

Noce post Paul. I have heard from another source that the tire test pic was from Atanta in 1965 using 1964 cars

The recent anniversary of Bill Wade's death recalls the danger involved with tire testing by having cars run over spikes at high speed.

Wade's accident caused a change in the way seat belts were located and almost caused Bud Moore to quite racing all together. I will not go into details but it was pretty bad.

The grid and engine bay shots are from Hot Rod Magazine and are among my favorites. The detail in the engine compartment is amazing. Everything is stock including the hood latch.

Thanks Rick. I wasn't sure about when the tire test occured. But the car is obviously the 64 Fury, so I figured it belonged in this thread.

To me, the scariest thing in the engine bay shot is the STOCK master cylinder. At least from it's outside appearance, it is the stock part. And even worse...it is a single circuit! The same one is under the hood of my 65 Satellite.

The more things change the more they remain the same. Dale Sr's tragic death was attributed in part to the way he had his seat belts mounted; lower then the manufacturer's recommended approach, which allowed more body movement.

The Earnhardt seat belt deal cost Bill Simpson his company. That accident was and is hard to decipher considereing he suffered an simillar injury to Adam Petty and others. Hit anything at high speed and it can be bad.

When Richard said that he would rather be lucky than good he may have been thinking about things like this.

Not sure if it's real or folk lore. But when I visited Daytona and first toured the track, there were still remains of Petty blue on the wall in the first turn. I don't recall the year.

Anyway, when the tour guide learned I was an RP fan, he stopped to show me the blue streaks and attributed this story to Richard....

In response to a reporter's question about why he preferred torun a high line, the guide said Richard replied, "Well, sooner or later, everybody's gonna hit the wall. I'd rather hit it from close by than from far away."

Perhaps a small example of "you make your own luck"?

The quote by Richard on why he ran close to the wall I've heard several times. I always thought that was why Dale Sr ran up there so much and why Junior does as well.
