Wendell Scott never had enough money to race with. His cars were old race cars that he got from other teams. Wendell's cars were usually 1-2 years old, the frames might have been older, some were down right junk. Wendell did most of the work on his cars himself. Wendell usually didn't much of a pit crew, his sons and some volunteers. That is a great photo ricklou

The Petty's used to have what they called the Wendell Scott nuts and bolt box for whenever he needed something at the race track.

Gosh, The hood on Wendell's car is toast, looks like they forgot to close the drivers door and who knows whats up with the left rear quarter panel.
What is going on in the rear interior of Richard's car, it doesnt look quite right ?

It does look odd Rick. Maybe just weird sun lighting?

The drivers door on the 34 car looks like it is still hinged. Looks like the left front took a small hit and kinked the LF fender back into the door and sprung it out a little.
Probably one of the last real true door slammers.

Wendell was from Danville Va., about an hour from me. I never met him, but my dad had many times. If you want to learn about this man, read a book that was written about him within the last 2 years called "Hard Drivin". Great guy that never had the big backing. Wendell got so much crap from NASCAR. One story is they told him his sons had to shave their beards and Wendell went crazy. Richard asked him what was wrong, Wendell told him, and RP said "in that case my whole team would have to shave". "I'll talk to them."

Wendell was not stupid if you can't be 43 be 34 the next best number. If you look at the #4 on Wendell's car, it's alot like RP's #4.

The number on Wendell's car does look simillar.
This has to be one of the cleanest black and white pics I have ever come across. If you have a modern big pc monitor this pic almost jumps off of the screen.

I do believe that Richard's and Wendell's numbers are the same style. Wendell being#34 and Richard#43 that was easy enough to do. Richard would help Wendell odds and ends type stuff. The Wood Brothers would also help Wendell on his cars when he was running a Ford product(Ford or Mercury).

What is going on in the rear interior of Richard's car, it doesnt look quite right ? It looks like a back board or something, how could he see out the back. Then again maybe he was bored under cautions and shooting a few hoops!! ;D

There was a story about wendell one time going to Lee Petty and telling Lee that he would not be able to race that weekend because he didnot have a transmission for his car, Lee got on the phone and called Lenard Wood and told lenard that he need a Ford Transmission and was sending Wendell after it and that PI would pay for it and when Lee Got the bill from Lenard Woods it was half price and a note that he was paying for the other half.
That is the way things were done back when.
Should be that way now help each other and "Do unto others as youwould have tnem do unto you".

Re the odd look inside Richard's Torino. Here is the web site of Mike Hallenbeck of Wappengers Falls, NY. He restored a Holman Moody car to replicate Richard's 69 Ford. www.noblelogistics.net/CooRides/member43/CR43pictorial.htmAll pictures link to Mike's web site A couple observations. One, look how much passenger compartment is behind the driver; in particular, it's about a mile to the rear window. And see how far up the passenger compartment sheet metal goes? In the prepaint view below, it looks like the bottom of the rear window is about the same height as the middle of the windshield. This shot is a similar angle to the Petty/Scott photo rick posted about. Notice you cannot see out the back window. All you see is the painted sheet metal inside the car. And even at this shallow angle, you still cannot see out the back window. So in the original race photo above, it is just interior sheet metal that we are looking at behind Richard.
