Richard at Martinsville on his way to a winRichard Petty and Bob Potter #29 ChevyRichard Petty inside the #29 Chevy of Bob Potter during the April 10 Virginia 500 at Martinsville Speedway. Petty won the 250-miler, his first of 15 wins on the track. Potter finished in 12th place. 1960 Champion Rex WhiteFrom How Stuff works: Rex White, a pint-sized driver with a heavy right foot, took the points lead in June and never looked back as he sped to his first NASCAR Grand National championship. White grabbed first place in the standings following the inaugural World 600 at the new Charlotte Motor Speedway, where he finished sixth. He won six races in 40 starts and finished 3,936 points ahead of runner-up Richard Petty. Petty suffered a major setback in the points race when he was disqualified at Charlotte for making an improper entrance to pit road. Petty had finished fourth in the 600-miler, worth 3,520 points, but when NASCAR disqualified him, he lost all of the points he earned that day. Petty won three times during the 1960 season, including his first career win at the old Charlotte Fairgrounds in February. The points lead changed hands seven times among five different drivers during the 1960 campaign. In addition to White and Petty, Jack Smith, Junior Johnson, and Bobby Johns all took turns leading the NASCAR standings. The following chart compiles the complete standings for 1960.

I love these posts so much. Though I was only 10 at the time I was just as any boy was, a car fan. Besides these were the new cars then and they were the cars us teens could afford six years or so later.
