He told his wife just after getting married. Racing is number one and if you try real hard you can be number two. We know who is always number one at home and maybe that is why Richard Petty spent so much time on the race track. Petty's competition wished that he would have stayed home more often. There are record books then there is Petty's book and it's very big. The list of accomplishments is mind boggling, here are just a few. Four times Petty has won the Daytona 500 and went on to win the title that year. 10 wins at Daytona is icing on the cake. 61 times Petty won from the pole position, many drivers would give their left arm for 61 victories. From 1967 to 1971 Richard won at least 10 times in each year and over 120 of Richard's short track wins were races at least 300 laps in length. Anyway you slice this pie Petty is the man. Off the race track Richard did not outrun anybody as he holds the uncountable record of signing his name for fans. The most recognized car in the history of Nascar

Hey Tom, I checked online sources for model kits of the 1964, like the picture I posted. They are available, but the price for a 1:25 scale kit starts at $60.00 and goes up from there. Kits of the later cars run about $13.00 to $30.00. Those '64s must be in big demand by hobbyists. I would like to get hold of one to build, but that price is pretty steep. Maybe I'll stumble onto one somewhere.

Thanks for the replies fella's.
There will be one more in this series of Champions plus a closing epilogue.
The Hall of Fame announcements will happen on the 14th and I feel that 4 of the 5 inductees have been displayed with this series. Bill France should be the first and rightly so.
Tom, you have created the opportunity to show some of this history and are the Cheer leader for us. Paul, you have established yourself as our resident statatician and keep us up to date with current events surrounding Cup racing.
Everyone here adds color to this small slice of what we like. This place for us is just like some down home cookin and I love it.
Thanks again
