I never saw that rear window on a stock car. . . How did they get away with that?

Tom, The bubble window was actually on a produciton Grand Prix 2+2. Courtesy of the Pontiac fans at www.classicalpontiac.com/gp/index.html:1986 -- In order to be more competitive in NASCAR racing, Pontiac introduced a special version of the GP called the Grand Prix 2+2. In order for this special car to be legal on the racetracks, it had to be released to the public. It included a special sloped nose, bubble rear window, large front spoiler, rear spoiler, and special paint that consisted of a silver top and a gray bottom divided by a red stripe. Richard Petty and his team helped Pontiac develop this special car. Underneath the special body though, the 2+2 was standard GP fare. Production of the 2+2 equaled just 1,118 units. Only trim changes for the rest of the line.

The Monte Carlo Aero Coupe and Pontiac 2+2 were a direct responce to Bill Elliott's dominance on the superspeedways in 1985. The GM notchback could not run with Bill's T Bird eventhough Darrell Waltrip won the title in 1985.
Elliott had not blown an engine in something like 2 years but that would change in 1986 because he had to put it to the mat due to the Chevy's and Pontiacs getting some aero help.
The Aero Coupe had better balance than the 2+2 having more of a deck lid. Favoritism among the GM camps was in full force at the time.

That is a nice, clean picture of the only two 7-time NASCAR champions racing side-by-side. The workmanship on those cars was impressive. To take a production body and make it that clean had to take a lot of work in the shop. Poats like this keep me coming back for more every day. Thanks guys.

Great article! No wonder I never saw one of those on the street. In fact that was during the time I didn't really watch much. Just never been a GM fan and when Awesome Bill started getting outrun by GM's I took a walk.

I was there at Pocono when he raced the 2+2 Pontiac i believe in 87. Look inside the car in photo and RP chewing on his towel.
