We found a lot of info on Mt Airy and how it was actually the model for Mayberry. The age of the people and the prices of the modest homes seem to make it a wonderful place to retire to. Judith and I have just about fallen in love with that place if it is anything near what we think it is. We are looking for a town with a lot of retirees and people over 45 or so. Mt Airy seems to have half over 45. The prices seem so good there. Seriously thinking about retiring there in about 6 years when I can hang up the day job. Thanks

Tom, my father in law grew up in Pilot Mountain 6-8 miles south of Mt. Airy. Small quaint little town. Not sure about the demographics.

Help out the Yankee...Mt Airy where?
In the northeast, that's just a resort in the Pocono Mountains.

Mt Airy North Carolina. It was the model for Mayberry on the Andy Griffith show. And Pilot Mountain was the model for Mount Pilot. Seems perfect for retirement. . . Don, I looked at your area too and it seems nice and affordable and the ages seemed good too. Just not sure I can handle nine months of winter when I am from the Atlanta area.

Why are there so many Scandinavians in Minnesota? They left home, emmigrated to America, landed in New York and then traveled west and north until they found a place as cold and snowy as the one they left!
You cannot tell from the name, but my family is from Sweden so I can make jokes like that. But thank goodness Dad stopped here on the east coast!

Tom we must have been brothers in a former live we have so much in common. Like I have told you before I went to NC years ago and fell in love with it. My son went to school in Mooresville NC at the Nascar tech. for a year and he moved back home. Me and my wife have almost decided we want to move to NC when we retire which will be 15 to 20 years unfortunately. She has been out of work for almost four years with fibromyalgia which apparently showed itself after she was in an accident at work and she goes online all the time looking at houses. The prices in NC now are very affordable but we don't have the money to buy a place now I'm the only one working. The only thing about NC I have seen that was not good was the highways. Interstate 40 from Greensboro to the Smokey's is mostly concrete and you can really feel the seems in the roads every 10 seconds. The other highways are old to but if your retired who cares right. NC is nice place though. I don't know why we would leave Virginia its really an nice place to. We have mountains they are just not as high as NC but still beautiful. Also have ocean. If we don't get to NC I will still be happy here. My dad moved to Florida but said it was to hot there and to cold in Va so he stopped in SC. I would just love to see the whole US. Ive never seen a desert which might be good but would like to go to all 50. I just love the outdoors. Montana looks awesome to but may be to cold for me. Just love this country.

If you go to google maps you can actually see what the area looks like from the road, if you ever do go visit NC you must go to Asheville to the Biltmore Estate. Just awesome place. You can spend a day there touring the mansion and grounds. Grandfather mountain is nice to just don't go up the mountain on a foggy morning. Not fun. I checked and its between 535 and 575 miles from my house to Mammoth cave national park in Kentucky depends on the route. One is across the concrete I40. How ironic.

Just went to pilot mount on google maps and clicked on explore this area and check out the veiw of the mountain. I tried to save it but it wouldnt let me. Cool looking place., downtown could be modern day mayberry rfd. The top of the mountain looks like a rock with trees growing out of it.,

Wow! Lots of good info apptyfn. We have also thought about Virginia as well and perhaps SC. Virginia has a lot of appeal to us. How is housing pricing there? We just want to look for a small older home when we retire. Nothing fancy. Would love to have enough land to be able to have a small 40 by 40 garden out back though and perhaps a small goat pen. Yes it does seem like we have a lot in common. That makes it more fun though!

My ex-brother in law moved to Virginia and said he loves it there. I think he lives around Dumfries. He's an ex-Marine, so maybe he feels at home near the base. Last I knew he was running an Aamco there. I went to Fort A.P. Hill a few years ago for the national scout jamboree. It was 110 degrees every day, with tens of thousands of scouts staying in tents. Not much fun. The army drove around with fire trucks spraying water on everyone to try to cool them off. I would like to see the Shenandoah Valley area, though to see where R.E. Lee and Stonewall drove the Union army crazy. (I'm a student of history. Especially the Civil War, or the War for Southern Independence, depending which side of the Mason Dixon Line you come from.)

now revilo you are talking my language. Dumfries is too far north for me. I worked in that area for 3 years, and glad to be back home (30 miles north of Martinsville). Anyway, I majored in history at Emory and Henry College in Virginia. I love Civil War history. And, the Shenandoah Valley is awesome!

Yes revilo the Shenandoah Valley is a beautiful place. My grandparents lived around five miles from the Appomattox Historical Park where Lee and Grant had there little meeting. I lived there with them when we were kids, been to the park there many times. The Blue Ridge Parkway is awesome to like I said the mountains are not quite as high as NC but still nice. Tom I think VA would be a good place to retire. I live in South central VA between Lynchburg and South Boston. The biggest problem we have had in the last 10 to 15 years is we have lost a lot of jobs. We had furniture plants and garment factories that have moved to Mexico and China. I worked at a hardwood flooring plant that closed. I think in 2006 in a three county area we lost about 1000 jobs. We have a foundry near Lynchburg that is closing in Dec losing about 190 jobs. But its still a beautiful state. I just love the Smokey Mountains in NC. It just hooked me when I was down there.
