From syndicated writer and honorary member of the Schaefer Hall of Fame, Monte Dutton. While I haven't asked him yet, I've got to believe it took a lot for him to write this article. He grew up in Clinton, SC as a life-long David Pearson fan. :-) But as his article says, The King is that rare breed of individual that cuts across fandom of other drivers / athletes. www.gastongazette.com/sports/racing/there-are-champions-and-then-there-are-heroes-1.61385Monte is on Twitter @montedutton if you care to follow or message him.

Thanks, it's great to read articles like that. On another note we don't get Schaefer Beer in the part of Canada I live in but I hope some day to be able to enjoy some.

Sure makes me proud he was always my hero growing up. I've never figured out how you stand there after getting the hell knocked out of ya and your machine destroyed and simply say.......... we'll be back next week. I continuously have people ask me how you continue to root for the 43 and now the 9. I just simply say you gotta be kidding to ask me a question like that. In all the years I have heard other drivers and press talk about him I have never, ever, heard anyone even momentarily question why we call Richard Petty the KING. I felt the same way about Hank Aaron too, he was my baseball idle, the majority of players today couldn't carry his shoes. pb 45 ;D

The man came up at a perfect.time and was fortunate to grow with the major leage stock car racing. Being humble and knowing who you are makes the difference. We can all learn from the character of someone like Richard.
