He had one bullet left and it could not have come at a better time. Richard wrote the book and completed the story at Daytona in July, 1984. The King displayed a masterful performance that day. On a very hot and slick day Richard went to work in his playground at Daytona. The strategy Petty used was a culmination of years behind the wheel. Even Cale Yarorough's blazing fast Chevy could not handle Daytona in July. Richard knew what to do for this one. Petty's mount was stout having Buddy Parrott on the wrench with a Robert Yates engine under the hood. Richard played it perfectly as Parrott was concerned that Petty was not talking on the radio in the later stages. In this chess match Richard knew that Cale had a faster car but also knew that Daytona in July was a different animal. He breathed the car keeping the tires good rather than trying to run away. He set up Cale for the finish as Yarborough took his shot on the last lap. As Cale's Chevy slid up in Daytona's greasey third turn Richard executed and classic bump and run to the flag clipping Cale by inches. What a magical piece of driving on a hot day in Daytona.

I whipped you that day - and I could buckle in and beat you again today. I finished all the laps, got the win, reached 200, met Reagan and ate the chicken. And don't you forget it.
