1974 - Richard finishes 2nd to Cale Yarborough in the Winston Western 500 at Riverside. Teammate Hershell McGriff finishes 10 in a 2nd Petty Enterprises #04 Dodge. The race began on January 20; however, rains fell and the teams returned on January 26 to complete it. I originally had this nugget under the Jan 20 thread. But I just learned about the week long rain delay to Jan 26 last night. So I'm recycling!

That is obviously a Petty Enterprises Plymouth sold to Hershel's car owner.. McGriff was a heck of a driver.
500 miles at Riverside was incredible. This was a bonified event anyway you cut it. Imagine starting the season by having to travel 3,000 miles, run a 500 miler then get ready for Daytona.
Nascar's schedule was brutal back in the day. Both roadcourse events on the schedule now are less than 250 miles in length.

I do wish we had more road courses. I do agree with those that say a true driver should be able to win on any type of track.

I have said it several times before. If you could drive Riverside and finish up front you could drive anywhere.
If you didn't see 4 or 5 dust clouds a lap it was unusual.
Sure loved watching them top those hills and try to get into a corner. Sometimes it was almost comical when the track was slick. Not just from oil but dirt and rocks too.
19 days and counting.
Pettycash I'm enjoying the devil out of your posts. I can only imagine how much you have stored and your sources.
