1958 - Gwyn Staley is killed after crashing on lap 1 of a convertible race at Richmond Fairgrounds Raceway. Staley was driving a Chevrolet for owner Julian Petty. For many years, North Wilkesboro memorilized Staley by naming one of its two annual races for him.

1975 - Richard wins the Atlanta 500 at Atlanta International Raceway. (The King always cracked me up with how he bent the bill of his caps at sharp angles.)
