1964 - This World 600 at Charlotte is best remembered for Fireball Roberts crashing, catching fire, getting dragged away by Ned Jarrett, and dying about 6 weeks later from burns suffered in the crash. What is generally forgotten is Petty Plymouths sweep the top 2 spots: Jim Paschal (#41) wins the race and Richard finishes 2nd. 1987 - Kyle wins the Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

A great day for Petty, but a sad day for Nascar fans old enough to remember. I am one of those.

True. But you're old enough to remember just about everything!
Deaths on the track are horrible in any era. But they were rampant in those days. Even more so in open wheel road racing where the driver was in essentially an over-powered cigar tube.
I don't want to see 'em crash. But it's comforting that today, when they do, the driver will usually walk away.

True. But you're old enough to remember just about everything! Tell him, Tom. NASCAR is nothing compared to those chariot races in the Colosseum. Now THAT was dangerous!
