I don't have any specific Petty trivia for January 2nd. Its one of a few gaps I have left. I do know RPM is thrashing to get ready for Daytona after a tumultuous fall. I also know this off-season isn't the first time RPM/Petty Enterprises has gone through this. We all know when PE sold to Boston Ventures. And we all remember when PE was acquired by GEM to become RPM. But the off-season of 69-70 also had some seeds of doubt. Petty Enterprises ran a Ford for one season, but they then announced a return to Chrysler in December to run Superbirds in 1970. Before the announcement was made, the team started making "what if" contingency arrangements - including the building of a 1970 Ford. I'd never known this fact or seen this photo until tonight. Was originally shared by Don Smyle on Facebook, and he's since uploaded it to Racers Reunion as well. Also, a full thread is available on Randy Ayers Message Board if you want to read more speculation and history about the build.

This is one of the coolest tid-bits of Petty history you ever dropped on us. Thanks Pettycash!

Great post. And one of the last years I believe of the real cars. . . Wishing they would return to real "stock cars" but knowing it will never happen.
But we can always dream!
