Dale Earnhardt's first Grand National/Cup start was in the May 1975 World 600 in a Dodge owned by Ed Negre. According to Billy Biscoe who once worked at Petty Enterprises, this Charger was built by Petty Enterprises as a backup car for Richard for intermediate tracks. It was sold to Negre who then fielded an entry for the Kannapolis rookie. Interesting too Earnhardt's 1st start was in a Petty-built Dodge in that year's World 600. That that was the year Richard finally got the monkey off his back and scored his first Charlotte win.

So, Ralph Earnhardt drove a #88 car for Petty Enterprises, then Dale, Sr. drove a #8 car that was built, but not owned, by Petty Enterprises. So when Richard Petty expands the current operation to three cars will Dale Jr. come on board to drive a #8 or #88? It would complete the circle of life, I guess.

Rev, if you didn't need your tongue to do your job so good, I'd tell you to bite it off for that idea!! LOL I'd put up with Jaws Waldrip in a Petty car before I'd stand for Junior behind the wheel!!

Aww djblue don't be so hard on Rev. I think he's onto something. I think RPM has plenty of opportunities for a 3rd generation Earnhardt behind a wheel. For instance, Dale Jr could drive a golf cart to haul garbage bags from the shop to the dumpster.

OOPS. I forgot to put the rolling eyes emoticon at the end of my post. There are plenty of drivers I would rather see behind the wheel of one of Richard's cars than JR. He does sell a lot of swag, though. I am still campaigning for Triple A. Allmendinger, Ambrose, and Almirola. Aric showed something at the end of 2010 while driving the 9. I think there is some potential there.

Now THAT combination I could go for! Aric did some really good things with that #9 right off the bat and I have to agree that with some more seat time there, he could really light it up. Here we go again, but I'm still hoping to have A,A,A,McC as our final lineup, looking at 2012.

Because Rev mentioned Ralph Earnhardt in a PE car, I guess I should share this pic then. Don Smyle recently shared it as well. I've seen the Earnhardt diecast, but I'd never seen a shot of the actual car. This is from 1957 race at Asheville-Weaverville.
