1964 - Richard Petty finishes a meaningless 26th in the Motor Trend 500 at Riverside after starting 2nd. He suffered transmission failure. About a month later, however, Richard claimed his first of seven Daytona 500s. 1972 - Andy Granatelli announces STP's sponsorship of Richard's 43 team. (The sponsorship also extended to a limited schedule 2nd Petty Enterprises Dodge for Buddy Baker for 1972.) Note the erroneous phrasing of STP's sponsorship of Petty Enterprises. Worded that way today, we'd all be going crazy on messages boards, Twitter, Facebook, and e-mail. 1975 - Richard starts 3rd but finishes 7th in the Winston Western 500 at Riverside. The race is the first Winston Cup event run under a new points system devised by Bob Latford in 1974. The system held up well for about 25 years - until Brian France mucked it up with the Chase concept.

Now there is a cool (albeit meaningless) statistic....
How many race day programs have featured the iconic #43?
