Bobby Allison's Roger Penke Mercury. He never won in it but this car sure was pretty except for when Bobby tore it up at Rockingham in 1976. If you look close the rear wheel is set back in the well. Nascar gave the teams several inches to play with concerning wheel base. Here is Donnie Allison at Daytona in 1975 with the Digard Chevrolet Laguna SS. Darrell Waltrip would hit the big time with this team later in the year. Lennie Pond praticing or qualifying probably at Talladega in 1978 in a Oldsmobile Cutlass 442. He would go on the win the only race of his career at Dega. Lennie was always a fan favorite as one of the regular independant drivers on the Grand National Circuit. Buddy Baker did pretty good driving for one of the most famous teams in Nascar's history.

Some follow-up... Here's Bobby's wreck from Rockingham 1976 and a picture of the mangled Mercurcy. After Donnie Allison was fired from DiGard, DW took over as you say and took the team to a new level. But DW also helped out the driver he replaced by relief driving for Donnie to a win in the 1977 Talladega 500. And remember that Lennie Pond's #54 ride was owned by Harry Ranier. Ranier later sold to Robert Yates. Yates then turned the team over to his son. And Doug then 'merged' with Richard Petty Motorsports. In late 1981, there were rumors (hard to remember a time without Jayski) that the King might leave PE to join Ranier. Imagine how different things might have been. Dale Inman was already gone to Earnhardt/Osterland/Stacy. Kyle was just getting started. Benny Parsons was the 1st to crack 200 MPH in qualifying in a Ranier car - could that have been the King? Cale busted off 2 Daytona 500 wins in the Hardee's 28. Imagine if King had those to raise his total to 9. And where would Davey Allison have landed?

Wonder what if Chrysler had never boycotted Nascar in '65 and the King went drag racing. Imagine how many wins there might be even still.
