The story has it that when Richard and Lynda were married she questioned Richard working on race cars all of the time.
He said: Racing is number one with me and if you try real hard you can be number 2.
Lynda could never really watch her husband on the race track but would listen to the race on the radio. She was still always there in the infield. In the early days Lynda kept the crew happy by always preparing lunch.
At Daytona in 1987 for the 500 Richard came in for a pitstop during the race. The crew cleaned trash off of the grill which is normal but there was a one dollar bill plastered to the car. They gave the money to Lynda and she surely still has that dollar. Another Bill won that race with Richard finishing a surprising third.
Later in Richard's career Lynda would only occasionally ask Richard about retiring and he would always say that he would quit when it was not fun any longer. After Richard flipped wildly at Daytona in 1988 he was brought to the infield care center to get checked out. Lynda was there and asked ....Are you still having fun ?
Richard says that he hung onto the steering wheel for so long because if he went home Lynda would put him to work.
As influential as Richard Petty has been to Nascar his wife has been there every step of the way and was at the fore front of the Racing Wives Auxillary for Nascar. This origanisation is still extremely important to the wives of race drivers and their families.
Richard maybe the King but Lynda is the Queen.
