You are right apttyfn. Not the same and you wonder if it will ever be. Things were so simple then. You got a stock car and fixed it up with a roll cage and took all the fabric and stuff out of the interior. You tuned the engine and did a few things to it. Heavy duty shocks and roll bars and all. Then you painted it and went racing. No legions of engineers or shops building specialized chassis units or any of that. Just a car you got someway or another. And drivers. Good old boys mostly. Guys with guts who kept going. Men who wieghed over a hundred pounds. Some died doing what they loved doing. Many injured. Sad times those were. Heartbreaking times. . . But good times. Before the world became so complicated. Before the government sold us all out as they have. When you could turn on a radio and probably like what was playing at that moment. So different times are. Our kids will never know the america or the world we have known. It isn't around anymore. I think we mourn it, many of us. Let's just do our best to enjoy what time our country has left with what little is left. And thank God we were lucky enough to be here for the best of it. For we saw glory!

The first pic is from Ontario Motor Speedway I think. The third shot shows victory lane from the 1977 Daytona 500. Do not know what the deal was in the first pic but it looks like the camera is strapped to the roof, would love to see that film.

Days Of Thunder or was that the wrong time? Great pics. Gotta say Junior Johnson was and will always be one of the alltime great drivers, innovators and cheaters. But we all loved him even when he did Chevies. Even as a teenage Petty fan I found Jr entertaining.

The Last American Hero, I think Jeff Bridges starred in that movie which was loosely based on Junior's life. It is said that Junior was the first to understand drafting and used it to help him win the Daytona 500 in 1960. He hung to the much faster Pontiac's untill they all dropped out due to mechanical failures. Also heard that the rear window blew out of his Chevy late in the race.

Definitely wrong time for Days of Thunder. I think Rick is right; it could be Last American Hero.
