Richard had a rough season in 1976 with losing Daytona in an embarassing way for starters. It stands to reason as the King had been the benchmark in Grand National competition for over ten years. Petty would win three races this year and finished second to David Pearson in all of the Triple Crown events and came up short as Cale Yarborough won his first championship. Petty recieved a gift at Pocono in 1976 when David Pearson caught a flat tire late in the event giving the checkers to Richard, a little payback after David crop dusted Petty the year before at Long Pond.

Ingo Giske posted these shots on FB. I think that this is a view of Pocono's tunnel turn. What a wonderful display of working the groove. Check out how wide this groove is and what these guys were doing with it.
